This is difficult stage for the owner to go through, it is marked by rapid growth, increased activity, excitability, and independence. This is when the of the most obedient puppies just seem to suddenly no longer care to listen. Sometimes it can seem like a chore to keep the puppy under control. And sadly, because this period can be taxing on many families this is also the period in which most dogs are relinquished.
In this stage dominance order is now beginning to develop, at this stage it is more important than ever to have consistent rules. It is necessary to control the dog’s behavior, this will ensure that the behaviors we desire pay off for the dog and the undesirable behavior do not. This is also the time you should enroll your puppy in obedience class, and canine sports. This will not only give your dog a positive outlet, but it will also strengthen your bond.

There are two phase of this period the first is from 3 to 6 weeks (canine socialization), this phase is the optimum time for dog-dog socialization, this is when a puppy identifies as the species with which it has primary contact. The second phase is from 6 to 12 weeks (human Socialization) this is when the puppy is forming social relationships. This is also the fear period. During the first week of the second socialization period week 6 to week, the puppy will tend to develop a far of strangers, so socialization now is critical. If socialization during this week does not occur the puppy can develop a fear of strangers, loud noise, and unexpected situations. Between 8 and 12 weeks it is extremely important for the puppy to have many positive, happy experiences and to avoid traumatic events to prevent behavioral issues related to fear in your dog. An example of something never to do to a puppy during this stage is yelling or screaming for having an accident on the carpet. Below is a checklist that I use for my dogs. And check out my blog on house training your puppy.
Chocolate is toxic to your dog, and based on the type of chocolate the amount of chocolate and the weight of your dog, it could be minor or a serious medical emergency. Chocolate contains both theobromine and caffeine, both of which can speed the heart rate and stimulate the nervous system.
Listed in order of Therobromine content:
If you know your dog has ingested chocolate , or has any of the symptoms below, contact the Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-213-6680 or your veterinarian right away. Symptoms of Chocolate Poisoning in dogs:
Garlic (Allium) is poisonous to dogs, even in small amounts, it can cause gastrointestinal upset, anemia, and can even be fatal if it’s not treated right away. The Sulphuric compounds in the garlic are absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract and change into reactive oxidants, which damage your dog’s red blood cells. It takes approximately 6.8 – 13.6 grams per pound of dog’s weight to produce harmful changes in the dog’s blood. The average clove of garlic weight between 3 and 7 grams. Please note that dogs should not eat onions, leeks, and chives, they are also part of the Allium family, and poisonous to dogs. Garlic is just five times more toxic to dogs than the rest of the Allium plants. Symptoms of Garlic Poisoning in dogs:
Diagnosis of Garlic Poisoning in Dogs: Diagnosing garlic poisoning can be done with a physical examination, lab tests, and medical history. Physical Examination
You should describe the symptoms you have noticed and how long they have been going on, recent illnesses and injuries, vaccination record, and abnormal behavior. Lab Test
Treatment of Garlic Poisoning in Dogs: The most important treatment your dog will need is to rid the body of the toxin by inducing vomiting and administering activated charcoal. The charcoal will bind to the poison to aid in the removal and detoxification. However, if that is unsuccessful, the veterinarian will probably admit your dog to the hospital and flush the toxins out of your dog’s system with a saline solution lavage. In addition, IV fluids and oxygen therapy will be done. To treat the anemia, the veterinarian will perform a blood transfusion and prescribe iron medication. Like Almonds the Macadamia nut is another food you should never give to your dog. In fact, the Macadamia nut is one of the most poisonous foods for dogs. Macadamia nuts belong to the Proteaceae family, a group of flowering trees found mainly in the Southern Hemisphere. Doses as low as 1.1 grams per pound of the dog’s weight have been found to affect muscle strength, with other symptoms such as vomiting and fever being more apparent with larger amounts. Symptoms of Macadamia Nut Poisoning in dogs:
Diagnosis of Macadamia nut poisoning is based on the symptoms and a history of macadamia nut ingestion.
Treatment of Macadamia Nut Poisoning in Dogs: Vomiting may be induced with cases of recent poisoning and activated charcoal may be given to reduce further absorption in the stomach. A cathartic medication like sorbitol will help to induce bowel movements and eliminate the nuts faster. Other treatments will be based on the symptoms. Medication may be given to reduce fever and make your dog more comfortable. In rare cases, intravenous fluids may be necessary. If a large amount was ingested, the veterinarian may want to keep your dog for 48 hours to monitor the symptoms. Other concurrent poisoning like chocolate or raisin toxicity might need more aggressive treatment. You Dogs may love the taste of Almonds and many other nuts, but these tasty treats can cause some serious problems because they are high in fat which can put your dog at risk of developing pancreatitis. It’s also difficult for your dog to digest which can lead to gastric-intestinal distress Symptoms of gastric intestinal distress in dogs:
What to Do if Your Dog Eats Almonds: Pets of different sizes may react completely differently to identical quantities of nuts ingested. If your dog consumes a couple of almonds and isn’t presenting any signs of choking or an obstruction, there’s little cause for concern. IF you dogs has eaten a large quantity of almonds of then the most effective treatment would be to induce vomiting, if the ingestion occurred within the prior 30 minutes. You can do this with hydrogen peroxide under the guidance of a veterinarian or with the assistance of poison control. If you do not know when your dog consumed the nuts, your only option is to monitor your dog for signs of illness. And if your dog does become ill call your vet immediately and make an appointment. In our development blog’s we will go through every stage of development of your new puppy, before the puppy comes home as well as after. We will also have some tips to help your puppy on his/her way to becoming a well socialized, well behaved, happy dog.
I am going to be starting with the first two stage of development which are Neonatal Period (0 to 10 days) and the Transition Period (11 to 21 days). At the first stage the Neonatal Period puppy responds only to warmth, touch, and smell. Your puppy is unable to to regulate body function like their temperature or elimination. At the second stage the Transition Period the puppies Eyes and ears are open, but sight and hearing are limited. Tail wagging begins and the puppy begins to control body functions. But, these are very important stages in development, were the environment, or the stimuli in the environment plays a critical role. This is when you puppies central nervous system develops, so inadequate stimulation at this stage will lead to abnormal sensory perception, this can lead to a dog that is emotionally unstable, has reduced learning ability, and trainability. Not only does this early environment need to have the appropriate stimulus but it also needs to be predictable, it should be at scheduled times to prevent the puppy from becoming frustrated and under stress leading to a dog that has learned it’s behavior has no impact on its environment. So what are these stimuli that the puppy needs to be exposed to, to accelerate growth, reduce emotional instability, promote increased sociability, and improve resistance to some diseases?

This is just a guide for you to use when training your dog to heel based on the Koehler Method.
This training method is based on the Koehler Method, the Koehler method assumes that treat training and clicker training are not effective methods of training, during distractions, emergencies, or when your dog is not hungry. Dogs trained using those methods may not respond the desired way during an emergency situation, which could possible put the dog in danger. The most effective methods of obedience training have not changed since World War II. But, feel free to add treats to the training. Equipment:
Heeling This training will instill attentiveness which is a prerequisite of a good student. By consistently using the combination of surprise and momentum, the handler can obtain a dog's attention; by repetition a handler can progressively increase a dog's attentiveness, thus building a foundation for favorable and permanent change of character. *Remember to make sure your dog has reached a trainable age, typically around 6 months.
